A recent study of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs in the United States found that the two drugs are linked to a 40 percent increase in death from heart disease, according to a study in theJournal of the American Medical Association, and an estimated $3 billion in additional revenue.

The study found that both drugs increase the risk of dying from heart disease, although Viagra, the drug for ED, is also associated with a 40 percent increase.
"We have to recognize that the benefits of ED medications are often modest and the side effects are often more pronounced," said study lead author Dr. Emily Carter, a Harvard University cardiologist and chairman of the department of cardiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "The drugs were originally developed for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and they work very well for ED but they also have side effects that are much more pronounced."

Garcia, a cardiologist and lead author of the study, said, "The two drugs are associated with an increase in death from heart disease, although we didn't get any studies to prove that these drugs do anything different from Viagra. In the past few years the number of deaths in the U. S. has been very modest."

They are not a cure for the disease and they are used to treat other diseases like atherosclerosis and vascular dementia."
The drug also has an association with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart hospitalizations.
Viagra sales plummeted by 60 percent in the United States in 2012, the study said, but sales fell just over 20 percent in the second quarter of 2013. At the same time, the drug did not reduce the risk of death from heart disease.
